Steering feels as if caught in a rut

At highway speeds, my steering feels very stable, able to track a line very well, until I want to make a subtle adjustment. It feels "stuck" and resists the input, then suddenly the wheel will break through and I will end up overcorrecting. It does not feel like tires, or alignment.

Can anyone point me to the culprit?

yep, I have one scheduled. I wanted to have anecdotes to back me up, but no one seems to be aware of any problems.
