AutoGuide posted a comparison of the 2017 Honda Civic Touring and the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport. The Elantra Sport does come out with a better price by beating the Civic by $1,450 USD. It also out-powers the Honda by 27hp and 33lb-ft of torque. However, the Civic does get better MPG but that could be because the Civic is 200lbs less than the ES.

Here's a link to the full thing. 2017 Hyundai Elantra vs 2017 Honda Civic

Those gunning for Honda should give the Elantra a chance. It's overall better than the Touring and more fun to drive. Yea, the fuel economy may not be as good, but 26 MPG City, 33 MPG Highway and 29 MPG Combined is still very good. with how cheap gas is, that difference shouldn't be a deterrent.

I'm pretty done with Honda to be honest so I'm not even looking at the new Civic. The minor differences in fuel economy, I really can't see affecting me. Naturally I'm a bit heavy footed so I don't expect some great gas mileage anyways. I actually much prefer the aesthetics of the ES and it has a bit more power too so that's a win-win for me.

I'm the same way and shocked that they did't try to make the Fit sporty like the Fiesta ST so for me it has come down to either the Fiesta ST or Elantra Sport. I have a slightly wide budget which allows for moving within surrounding segments which helps a lot here.

Did you at least look into the new Civic Si?

I did.. but I can't see myself going towards the Civic in general. Just not my cup of tea I guess.

What have you been looking at ??
As mentioned previously its the Fiesta ST or Elantra Sport, don't see anything else around at the moment although i'm open to whatever comes up. Fiesta and Elantra are tried and true models, so its hard for me to deviate from that.

This was the challenge for me too, there's not a lot of alternatives out there right now.

Civic Hatchback Sport - can't get leather with a manual
Ford Fiesta ST or Focus ST - Fiesta is small, Focus little spendy and they're both Fords so reliability
VW GTI - reliability again and more expensive

Are there any other alternatives out there? Nissan's hotted up Sentra? Interior trim nowhere near as nice and significantly more expensive. Hyundai found a really nice niche with the sport that delivers enough sportiness, features and value to have a segment almost all to itself. Toyota will be coming out with a hot hatch with 200hp in the near future, which could be good, but how long will you have to wait? It was a pretty easy decision for me to go with the ES.
