I thought it would cut down on under hood heat.
It might, but by how much and what impact on performance will that temperature drop have?
eg: If the intake goes right beside the hot side of the turbo then yeah, it would make sense.

Mind you, a blanket would be really cheap with no negative impact on the car's reliability.

Not 100% correct. Some turbo's have been known to crack with a blanket on them.
Good to know,
I actually have a spare blanket (and pipe wrap) sitting in the garage. Our turbo is pretty small and far away from the intake so I wasn't planning on wrapping it.

don't wrap your turbo unless you have to. Remember turbo needs to be cooled just like everything else for bearing life
