Hey all,
Just got into an 18 ES with the auto trans. Noticed while driving at partial throttle, just as trans wants to shift gears, rpm’s climb about 250-500 rpm (like a blip) and then it shifts. Does this sound like normal operation?
I have other DCT cars and never experience this so I’m concerned that I may have slipping clutch.

This has been happening to me since mine was brand new, but it only occurs while the car is warming up. After being driven for 10 mins or so, it no longer occurs. Have about 33k miles on my EGTS DCT.
I have tried watching YouTube videos of first drives with the ‘18 Elantra Sport and I don’t notice those cars doing it.
My rpm flare happens regardless if the car is cold or warmed, but it is intermittent. I’d say it occurs 90% of the time though.
You have any videos of it?

It would be the TCU logic then. I normally shift manually on cold days until the engine warms up and the DCT is shifting 'normally' in the auto mode. If you experience no unpleasant vibration when you just release the brake pedal and let the car roll, there is nothing wrong with the clutch pack. I'd change the gear oil if you have not done so, as it does help a bit.

I’ve been really focusing on what the trans wants to do these past couple days and I agree with you.
It doesn’t make the best decisions in regular automatic especially if driving aggressively. Sport mode gets a bit better with even less flaring, while manual shifts are going to be the best driving experience.
Only had the car a month or so now so still learning. I’ll change the engine oil and trans fluid soon and I’m looking for a shop to do a walnut blast maybe at 50k and 100k

I had a similar problem that was really annoying and related to the DCT trans slip. In my last '13 Elantra, when you lost traction on acceleration it would lock you in gear from upshifting even if you were at redline Which is really confusing to me, and sounds like potential engine damaging waiting to happen.
Flash forward to end of year '22 I bought an 23k mi ES18 in the Fall, when on a trip from Houston to Austin in December, in normal weather conditions, no rain, not hot not cold. Half way into the drive I went to turn right from a residential street to a fast flowing highway, I aggressively accelerate, the car refused to auto upshift, no traction warning or anything. I had flashbacks to the '13 but this was all a TCU glitch and left me holding up traffic until the car decided it wanted to upshift after riding redline back down. Any ideas??
