6MT:
In most gears:
RPM starting at 2500 up to 5000 ish
When increasing throttle from 10% to 80% the acceleration hesitates, stutters, feels 'uneven'.

Anyone else feel this? Any real issue? Any fix?

I noticed this a couple times, but have yet to experience it since I have been running 91 octane. Maybe it helped? Not sure. What are you running?

I noticed it.

Almost like the wastegate is opening and closing.

Seems weird, but goes away if you boot it. The last turbocharged car I owned was a 1986 Mazda 626, so I don't have much experience with modern turbos, is this a characteristic of modern turbos?

I wonder if it's the wastegate dump. It is controlled by a vacuum valve I believe. So even with the slightest back off on the gas pedal, it will dump boost.

I'm sure its "normal" and has to do with Hyundai needing to meet emissions/durability/efficiency targets.

I feel this too, especially when in the lower RPM range 2-2500rpm when increasing to moderate throttle to pass. It is a hesitation/bucking. I just chalked it up to the small engine size. I have driven larger turbo engines and did not notice this. It doesn't feel particularly violent or severe so I will probably just downshift to get the RPM up to avoid it.

I get it all the time, too. Especially when I was driving back to Austin from way down by the Mexican border this past weekend. Took lost of 2 lane roads and had to pass people doing 50 in a 70... got all stuttery on hard acceleration.

Does anyone with a moded/not stock air intake have this issue?
I recall the VT have a little magnetic flap gate in their air box.

as strange as it is, surging is very common on the 1.6T in stock form, once tuning is addressed this is something that we focus heavily on with every car that we tune, not only should a car be fast, but it should feel comfortable while cruising or under part throttle conditions as well. Not everyone drives a 100 percent throttle so 1-99% is just as, if not more important!

If tuning can eliminate surging, what is causing it? Is there a wastegate solenoid that can be tuned? It feels kind of like the turbo is bouncing off a rev limiter, or I guess, a boost limiter, like it's intermittently dumping boost instead of holding it steady.

I was thinking that it felt more like a fueling issue than a boost issue, but I've been wrong before. :)

Yeah, could be that too, or a combination of things. Just curious what it is, it seems to be a normal characteristic of the engine. Hyundai tuned it that way for a reason, and if it can be corrected by tuning, the tuner would have to know exactly what parameters that needed to be changed.

Is this the same engine that's in the Veloster that came out in 2011/12? Does that car have these same issues? What's the life of an engine run in a vehicle these days? Technology is always improving, yet this engine is 5 years old now.

Ahh, it sure sounds like Hyundai's way to ease stress on the engine, smart move since they play on reliability as a selling point and have to cover their behinds when producing vehicles at the volumes they typically do. Good market for tuners to get into ;)
