Curious what kind of turbo we have. A little online research suggests we have a Borg Warner K03, but that was from a press release a few years ago. Anyone know? If so, what about this turbo, water cooled and/or oil cooled?

Thanks, do you know if it's the K03? Also, how easy is access?

I am not sure if it is or isn't, I don't think anyone in the states has ripped it out yet. I K ow they ha e had it over a year in Korea. As far as being easy to access, it's in the back up against the firewall... Would be a pain to get to from the top, easiest way might be from underneath

Yeah, looks like a pain from the top, and I've only seen underneath from the front doing an oil change with ramps, not enough room to slide back that far (This car is low and I'm a little fat!)

Curious how easy it'd be to swap turbos, either for long term maintenance, or performance.

If you can get to it with out having to pull the motor it shouldn't be that hard to swap.

Yep, that's the question.

Perhaps one of the vendors might know?

I'd like to know as well. I took the car to a local exhaust shop here in Australia to get a high flow down pipe made... and they wouldn't touch it. Exhaust Flange off the turbo housing was cast iron and one piece straight into the first CAT....

So why wouldn't they touch it? I'm not sure I've understood correctly, the turbo is a single piece cast with the headers+flange+downpipe?

I think i found something.....

Hyundai Gamma 1.6T Turbo Part No. 28231-2B800
Yep 28231-2B800 for the Elantra Sport/SR and 28231-2B700 for the Veloster turbo. Definitely a new unit.

We had the car up on the hoist and the mechanic showed me what was going on.
Space was tighter than a ......... from underneath, like really tight, never seen anything like that before, you need tiny little hands to get in and work on it.

They said that the flange off the turbo that attached to the down pipe was not a normal fitment and also cast iron. It was rectangular with 5 bolts that looked similar to this picture i found on the net.

and yes different to what i posted above unfortunately.

I'll try and go to a different exhaust place shortly to get another opinion, but this place is widely regarded as the best in Melbourne.

Cool I appreciate the info, perhaps some of the existing companies will end up making bolt on replacements, albeit hard to fit ones :p

I too have been meaning to get my SR to a shop nearby that make a tonne of turbo downpipes with excellent feedback, see if they reckon they can do it and for what sort of cost.

I really am not sure what ball park cost this would even be in AUD to custom make and fit one..

Just looked under mine while changing the oil, the turbo is only oil fed. I was really hoping for water cooled, looks like I'm going to change oil more often.
