I filled up with one of the air vap recirculation hose or whatever its called and it never shut off- cause gas to go everywhere all over the paint. Happened once. The lady said some of the newer cars have it(on board anti vaporation or something), never heard of it but I was pissed obviously. Hasn't happened since.

I just had this problem with my 2018 Elantra lease. Only had it a few weeks and first fill up went fine. The next two times I had the same issue as everyone else. Took it to the dealer today and they said nothing was wrong with it! I had looked this issue up after it happened the first time so I knew it was a fairly common thing with Hyundai's but the dealership mechanics clearly thought i just didnt know how to pump gas. It now has a full tank from the dealership

Don't put the nozzle in all the way. Mine had issues when I first got it (April '17) and since I started doing that it's been fine.

Im not really sure how it would be sketchy, but it does work. I saw a gas station attendant do it one time and tired it for myself. Works like a charm.
With the tension from the hose it could pop out.

I'm good just not putting it in all the way. Still works like a charm, no issues.

I've noticed this before, but did not think much of it.. Seems to work most of the time, just yesterday i did 12 gallons with it not clicking off once, anyone know if it would be possibly be related to the type of nozzle? I remember the place where I had the issue, is a less than one year old BP station - yesterday was a CITGO that is older, so not sure...

I have a 2018 Elantra GT Sport automatic trans, 4500 miles on it, I can't use the little clip on the gas pump that keeps the handle squeezed because it will just keep shutting off as if my tank was full, I have to sit there and hold it and even then if I don't hold it with just the right amount of pressure it will shut off, its very annoying and takes forever to fill up. I know this has happened at Shell and BP for sure and it doesn't matter how much or how little gas I have in the tank. Also noticed tonight that when I filled up my tank to full which is a guessing game now, my acceleration was amazing whereas its been too sluggish lately, humidity was 85% temp 79 degrees, can't help but wonder if this issue could be affecting performance in some way. Also my mpg has dropped badly, averaging around 24 in mixed driving, was getting 28.

The clicking off is what this thread is about and the simplest solution is to not put the nozzle in all the way. I know a lot of pumps are different, but with the ones in my area if I put the tall stopper ring at the end of the spring (see photo) just on the inside of the lip near the top, it never clicks off early.

I tried not putting the nozzle in all the way tonight and had no issues, thanks alot for the help.

I've found that any pump with a spring loaded nozzle does not work, like Shell, Royal Farms, Wawa, and some 7-11s. Any pump with the rubber cone looking thing and either a small spring or no spring has not given me trouble, like Sunoco and Exxon.

So, Ive had this problem at many different gas stations, the trick is the push lightly on the handle to the left so the handle can sit higher than where the hose is supposed to sit.

holy crap I thought it was me! but I figured out you have to tilt the nozzle same angle as the rear door or wheel well. It's weird instead of the nozzle being perpendicular to the ground. I've tried this many times works perfectly. I think the filler pipe is angled, so the flow ends up shutting the nozzle off

holy crap I thought it was me! what luck I saw this post
I figured out you have to insert fully and TILT the nozzle at a similiar angle as the rear door opening or wheel well. It's weird instead of the nozzle being perpendicular to the ground like most cars. was frustrated for a year before I figured it out on ly 2017!!

I've tried this many times works perfectly. I think the filler pipe is angled, so the flow ends up shutting the nozzle off. hence the weird insertion angle
