Subwoofer options

Hey all,

Looking to add a sub to my ES to really round out the sound. Already changed all door speakers which vastly improved the sound quality and max volume/clarity up top, but the system is still lacking some low end thump.

It's the base 6 speaker setup so there's no existing sub or spot for one on the parcel shelf. I really want to have a slim/small install as to not compromise on trunk space or being able to fold the seats down as there's a little rear passenger due and I want to maintain the car as practical as possible.

So a few questions I have.

  • Will a sub/Amp wire to the back of the 7" infotainment system or will it come off say the rear speaker wires? I know I'll need to get power all the way from the battery.
  • Do the slim sub/amp combos that fit under seats etc really add enough low end bass to satisfy? Not looking for eat shattering levels just fill out the missing freq's accecptibly
  • what have other people done for a space conscious sub install? modify parcel shelf? under seat? is there a steathbox style option for the AD elantra??

All your help and advice appreciated.

You will need to do like Ja'Crispy said. Get yourself a mono sub amplifier that accepts speaker level inputs. You basically tap the existing speaker outputs instead of using RCAs.

OR,

A more quality option would be grabbing an AudioControl LC2i. It will use a set of speakers as input (rears or front woofers) and convert them to line level with RCA outputs. It also has Accubass which corrects bass rolloff that the OEM system may produce.

Have one in my 2014 Elantra Limited with Nav. I since have upgraded to the LC7i and am powering a sub amp, and a 4 channel with all new speakers. Works flawlessly and should work just fine for the new ES.

(Side note: I don't own an ES yet. Just a hardcore lurker looking to upgrade in the next few months and thought I could help. Audio is my strong-point with modding.)

Waiting for the pics :D Can't wait to upgrade the sound system. I have a mono amp and 12" pioneer sub that I bought to install in my previous car. Not sure what is the best place to tap for the sub.

I wish these cars were like my previous VW's that only had one wiring package, so the wires were there for options you didn't have. You just had to buy the options and you could plug them in to the existing wires. It would make it so much easier if the subwoofer wiring that they use on the premium system went to the trunk in the base models.

So I ended up buying a self contained sub/amp combo to try and install, one of these bad boys. https://www.pioneer.com.au/shop/car/ts-wx120a/

The spot behind the centre console was a PERFECT size, slightly raised by really flat thanks to the car being a front wheel drive, excitement was rising.

So I pull the dash apart and get the deck slid out and it has neither of the two connections this unit needs to connect (Speaker line input or RCA input).

Looks like if you have the base 7" unit / 6 speaker system, you're plum outta luck trying to add a subwoofer to that setup, unless someone here knows a good solution given what I've said? Here are some pics of the back of the unit.

You can bolt it under the rear window ledge. There is steel there. Use steel straps (very cheap) to get it tight and use foam sheet against the steel.

Can anyone with the premium sound system and the stock subwoofer fitted please take and share some above/below photos? I'd like to get an idea what I'm up against and from the bottom side it seems like part of the boot mechanism runs awful close to the hole for the sub on my car so I want to suss that out.

I bought a 6 pack of wire taps, got the deck out and tapped the rear left and right speakers in the immediate few inches of wire coming out of the deck. The only other thing that I needed that wasn't in the box of the Pioneer TW-X120A was a micro fuse "add a circuit" (happy to take pics of how I installed that in the fuse box too) and a 1.5 metre Rca male to female extension.

All the cables are run under interior paneling (mostly centre console under the armrest) and a pic here shows the only part of exposed cable. I put the little controller for it in the glovebox, had to reverse phase or bass was non existent (glad they include such an easy way to reverse it), and I have it set on maximum gain.

All in all it's very impressive when you consider the footprint, it's about the size of a 10" tablet but obviously thicker, the placement I've chosen is great to not put too much bass under someones butt (plus foot air air vents prevent a perfect under seat install). Sure it's no 12" in a box but as I said, it's well decent.

Feel free to ask Q's about the install.

I think the talk here has been about the stock system. How is the Premiere Package sound system? That much better and worth it? Or would people want to upgrade that as well? I see 2017 Civic Si owners hating their "enhanced" sound system. Wondering if the better Hyundai system isn't up to snuff either? Just a glance at youtube reviews say it's excellent. But you never can tell. Any thoughts on how good the better system is? Would hate to spend the $2400 for the upgrade and then have to upgrade from there.

I have the premium package and I really like the infinity system. The increased size of the display is nice and has all the options I would want. My wife has a Veloster with premium stereo which has more wattage, but overall I think the Elantra system sounds better, more refined. The Veloster system may be a tad louder overall with more bass. The subwoofer is placed in a wierd position on the upper frame of the trunk in the Elantra with no cover or enclosure. It's almost as if they planned for the trunk to be the enclosure but that's a lot of square footage. If I was to upgrade, I would possibly see about an upgraded 8" sub to possibly get a tad more bass, otherwise I'm very content with this system. I wonder if a smaller enclosure could be molded to the upper trunk region to tune the subwoofer.

I guess from my perspective the base AU spec comes with the sunroof and blind spot/cross traffic/heated seats etc, so it's kind of most of the tech package anyway? just the smaller 7" screen instead of 8" but it certainly doesn't seem small and 6 speaker not 7.

Anyway all up I've spent ~400 AUD so about ~300 USD on upgrading all the interior speakers and adding the sub and the result is quite a great system now, it would be interesting to see how mine would compare to the 7 speaker infinity system, but I'm in Aus so you'd need someone on the US mainland that has done the same to test that. I guess I can't honestly see the 7 speaker system coming with speakers like the kickers I've put in, but the sub could well oust the TW-X120A sub I've used.

Where are you in Aus? Im in Sydney and Im about to have a small slim powered sub installed. I wanted to buy 8inch to put in the spare hole in the boot but no one wants to install it saying it will sound crap and vibrate. They said the ones that do have the stock sub in there will have little power compare to an aftermarket sub hence there mabe no vibration to the stock sub. I have no idea cause I dont have a stock sub.

When I asked around in Sydney nearly all said not to install it in that stock rear position cause it will vibrate and blah blah. I ended up with a powered sub that fits under the passenger seat. Required wiring was all included with the sub I got. Also, I think you will need to have another amp to power a sub that you would put in the stock rear position cause the stock head unit will not power up an aftermarket sub or not power it up well enough. Thats what I was told anyways.
